Five Assegais Country Estate

The Five Assegais Country Lodge is located at the very top of the Mpumalanga escarpment about 20 km outside the town of Machadodorp, famous for becoming the capital of the free Republic for a few months under the then president Paul Kruger. The estate on which the Country Lodge is located serves as a functioning farm where in addition to the breeding of indigenous N'guni cattle, the estate is in the process of re-introducing much of the indigenous wild animals that used to roam the region.

Located only two and a half hours drive from Johannesburg, the Five Assegais Country Lodge offers its guests four romantic double bedrooms, each with its own exquisitely designed en-suite bathroom, in a luxurious setting. It serves as the ideal spot from which to engage in a host of outdoor activities, in particular fly fishing and hiking.  Fly fishing from one of our four well stocked trout dams is sure to satisfy angles of all levels. As far as hiking is concerned, the Five Assegais estate is a true paradise with 3 certified and well acclaimed trails.  Our newly created, 2-day 'Oom Paul's trail', which was established in conjunction with the neighbouring Bermanzi estate affords hikers an opportunity to really appreciate our forna and flora. So far, 108 unique indigenous plants have been tagged along our trails, though the jewel in our flora crown in undoubtedly our spectacular unspoilt yellow wood forest.   Due to our location, at the lip of the Mpumalanga escarpment, hikers are treated to spectacular pools and waterfalls, crowned by the famous Bride's Leap Falls, the second highest waterfall in Mpumalanga.

In addition to the above, Five Assegais is well suited for the practice of other outdoor activities such as bird watching, hiking, mountain biking, quad biking (bring your own quad bike), and trail running. For those wishing to explore the surrounding area, Badplaas, Belfast, Waterval Boven, Pilgrim's Rest, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, and the Sudwala Caves are within easy driving distance. Slightly further a field (an hour away) is the spectacular game reserve of Songimvilla which has spectacular landscapes and the big four (no lions).
